The Independent Studies class provides students with the opportunity to research and gather first-hand knowledge about a career, trade, or vocation that the student is interested in pursuing after they graduate from high school. Students use a combination of traditional research techniques combined with job shadowing and interviews to gather information that will be used in the creation of a final project that includes a video that details some aspect of the career they have been studying all year. This class also stresses the demands of a professional career. The teachers of this class see this as the intermediate step between high school and the professional world. To this end, students are required to carry themselves in a professional manner when they are conducting job shadows and giving presentations to the class. Notebooks are due at the end of each six weeks which reflect the research, job shadows, and other information they have collected during that six week period.
